R&D Technology Transfer

Bridging the gap between R&D and the customer

The Issue

High-caliber R&D firms challenge scientists and engineers to discover and develop new technologies. In many cases, firms want a partner to help commercialize these new technologies.

The Role We Play

Transitioning innovative and complex medical technologies from R&D labs to commercial and military customers can be very challenging. In fact, statistics confirm a low efficacy of federal programs in realizing true commercialized medical technologies. FDI not only seeks to be a part of the solution, it has the potential to play a pivotal role in it.

We are (1) uniquely qualified to partner with R&D firms to develop and execute a plan to successfully transition your technology to real-life applications and (2) experienced with mid-to-late stage design, development, testing, and other requirements to ensure needed technologies are effectively cleared through regulatory hurdles, designed for manufacturing/maintenance, distributed through the proper sales channels (e.g., ECAT), and supported with maintenance/tech support after the sale.

During the product development process, FDI provides subcontract engineering services as early as Technical Readiness Level (TRL) 4.
If you have a DoD customer, we have extensive experience with military design and testing specifications and can provide you with significant
value in mid-tolate stage product development.

Testing and Evaluation

Ruggedness and reliability are absolute requirements for the US DoD. With our experience building and executing test plans per mil-spec requirements, we can leverage test protocols to iterate and improve your design.

Prototyping

Providing a hands-on experience with your product early in the development stage is crucial to avoid costly mistakes and to make the product development process more efficient. Our Engineering design team can quickly take your concept from paper and digital to actual production with our latest tools, including CAD, digital printing, and CNC.

We Are Experts in:
  • Design for ruggedness and reliability (e.g., MIL-STD-810H)
  • Design for manufacturability
  • Design for maintenance using Reliability Centered Maintenance analysis
  • Design for Human Factors (e.g., MIL-STD-1472H)
  • Supply Chain Analysis, including compliance with the Buy American Act
  • Industrial design (i.e., aesthetics)
  • Operations and service manual development
  • ISO 13485 Design Controls and Project management
  • PLC programming, PCB design, and Electrical design
Medical Device Capabilities

As a medical design and manufacturing company, FDI is privileged to work with some of the country’s best R&D firms. Our experienced designers and fabricators help bring your research to the next level, covering the entire product life cycle.

Medical devices used by the U.S. military must travel through, and perform in, some of the most extreme conditions in the world…including heat, cold, and high altitude. With our experience in developing FDA-cleared products meeting rigorous requirements, we help companies overcome many of the hurdles of developing medical devices in any application, whether military or commercial. FDI is an FDA-registered facility operating within an ISO 13485 Quality Management System that ensures all projects are completed with excellence and according to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).
